It seems like every off season we long time Detroit Lions fans get pie in our eye dreams of this high priced free agent or that one. Like one more free agent signing is the answer for the team that continually disappoints us. When word first leaked that Nate Burleson had gone to the media trying to recruit RB Reggie Bush the first reaction of this Lions fan was that is so not the answer. However, then I started thinking about it. Bush could play the role of Jahvid Best, who Martin Mayhew failed to replace before the start of the 2012 season. Without a doubt the failure to replace a guy who is likely never gonna play NFL football again set this team back in 2012. The Lions front office cannot afford to make the same mistake this year.
They will have to determine if Bush is truly the answer for this offense and roster.
Big name aside, Bush needs to come to Detroit and be able to do a few things. He would need to help this offense move the chains and along with Mikel Leshoure get those tough yards on the ground that extend drives. He would need to be another weapon in the passing attack for QB Matthew Stafford, and he would also likely need to return punts for the Lions, because like it or not the return game was a huge issue for the Lions last season.
The main problem there is Bush did not return punts for the Miami Dolphins last season, and he only returned six punts during his two year stint in SouthBeach. While it is true that anyone is going to wind up being better than Stefan Logan was, it does not seem that Bush is the answer for this team’s special team woes. However, for the Lions he could still hold a lot of value.
Sure he is a name, and sure he will bring media attention and help sell tickets, but Bush would have to replicate his two years in Miami with the Lions to truly be an effective weapon. We are talking abut nearly 1,000 yards a season and four yards a carry behind a Detroit O line that doesn’t run block as well as it should.
If Bush is just part of plan that sees this front office rework the offensive line then a guy with this kind of talent makes tons of sense. If that work is not going to be done this off season then we are really wasting our time discussing Mr. Bush.
