The Detroit Lions traveled to Chicago yesterday, where they took on the Bears in what ended up being an all out grudge match. They were also handed their 3rd loss in the last 4 games, final score, 37-13.
One thing I can say, is there is never a dull moment when it comes to the Lions. Going from an 0-16 season to a 5-0 start to the season, then following up with 3 losses, well, consistency might not be their strong point. I recently read an article written by FOXSports.com writer Greg Couch, in which he mentioned that the Lions are clowns and become more of a joke every week. Really Greg? Obviously he’s not a Lions fan or maybe not much of a fan at all. So quick to insult and put down a team who has overcome so many obstacles to get where they are today. I’m not saying the Lions are perfect, because clearly they need to work on a few things, but dang, lay off a bit. The Lions are not done yet.
Anyways, back to the game. QB Matt Stafford displayed what was NOT one of his better games. He threw 4 interceptions, 2 of which were returned for touchdowns. He was also playing with a broken finger. Hmm, maybe we could give him some leeway. There were a total of 6 turnovers by the Lions, 1 fumble each by Calvin Johnson and Nate Burleson in the 1st quarter. The wind was a factor also, reaching gusts of 30mph.
Then there were the “cheap shots”. The game was filled with big hits and hits after the play was over, and despite what some people say it was not one sided. The Bears held their own but I guess I’ll admit the Lions were a bit more aggressive. Ndamukong Suh was responsible for a few, including a tackle on Bears QB Jay Cutler where he ripped his helmet off. Then there was a late hit, again on Cutler. The biggest debacle came early in the 4th quarter. Stafford threw an interception to Tim Jennings, and Jennings ran it back 52 yards, with Stafford following the whole way. Guess he’s had enough. Stafford was blocked by D.J. Moore and ended up throwing Moore to the ground by his helmet. Apparently Moore didn’t find that at all amusing because he came after Stafford like a pit bull on steroids. Big mistake. Within seconds, Moore was swallowed up by numerous Lions and then an all out fight started between both teams. He messed with the wrong QB.
In the end, all the cheap shots, questionable tackles and head bashing were all for nought. The Lions lost yet again. Don’t jump off the bandwagon yet though, they still have a chance. They just need to channel that passion for the game in a new direction and get back on track.
